Communicating with the business owners, residents and other stakeholders impacted by large transit projects is a challenge – especially in densely populated areas where frequent route changes impact traffic and affect business access. That’s the situation that inspired Sundt and a joint venture partner to develop a custom smartphone application to connect with stakeholders while the pair constructed a 3.2-mile expansion of Phoenix’s light rail transit system, known as the Northwest Extension. The free app – one of the first of its kind in the construction industry – provides up-to-the-minute route information, construction updates, information about community groups, schools, traffic impacts, business promotions/coupons and more. Its success, and the relatively low cost of development, is turning smartphone apps into key communication tools for managing community impacts during construction.
