An innovative approach to a new emergency services dispatch and operations center for the City of San Antonio, coupled with a stringent schedule, resulted in a cutting-edge facility prepared for the future. The San Antonio Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) is a 9-1-1 response center, but it’s also used for all police and fire dispatching. The progressive and somewhat unusual arrangement provides a substantial advantage for coordination, allowing the individual services to work face-to-face with each other for the same event.
In addition to taking an innovative approach to co-location, the PSAP was also the first 9-1-1 facility in the nation equipped for 9-1-1 response through text messaging – before mobile service providers had the capability to offer it.
To accommodate all of the critical functions of the facility every system is redundant, from electrical to plumbing, mechanical, data, telephone and fiberoptics, ensuring that emergency response services are never interrupted. More than six miles of data lines lie beneath the 15,000-square-foot raised floor in the dispatch center.
As the Construction Manager at Risk for the project, Sundt and our joint venture partner helped the owner balance program, budget, schedule and aesthetic design to meet the goals of the project. The City of San Antonio received a visionary facility ready to handle emergencies with greater efficiency.
