Northern Arizona University had 20 months and $12 million to renovate and upgrade its School of Communication building. As the Construction Manager at Risk, Sundt took on the challenge to deliver everything the university wanted at a price it could afford – and do it all without interrupting the 24/7 operation of KJAC, the campus radio and television station.
Demolition work began immediately, while design was still in progress, with construction beginning in phases just a few months later. We provided ongoing constructability reviews and numerous cost alternatives throughout the entire preconstruction process, which helped meet the university’s budget and schedule. The project included renovating 60,000 square feet of the existing facility and adding approximately 36,000 square feet of new space.
The project also included a complete gut and renovation of the existing education portion of the building, plus renovations to the existing KJAC space. The end result was a cutting-edge teaching facility with modern studios, tiered lecture halls and mediated classroom space.
