As satellite technology helped redefine America’s television viewing choices in the 1990s, speed was essential for a service provider’s success – which is why America Sky Broadcasting (ASkyB) Company’s $130 million television communications center in Gilbert, Arizona, had to be constructed with near record speed.
Sundt met the challenge with extraordinary discipline, hard work and determination. We set 240 workers and subcontractors to work on a 40-acre site using a fast track approach, where design and construction overlapped; the structure and steel went up while design was still underway on other parts of the project. This was an unusual and still unproven approach in the 1990s, when design was usually 100 percent complete before a project broke ground.
We completed the 120,000-square-foot ASkyB satellite broadcasting facility in less than six months – eight months faster than similar facilities around the country – allowing the company to avoid falling behind the satellite delivery trend and losing market share to its competitors.
